Run, Walk, Volunteer

Improve your cardiovascular and respiratory health while giving back to our community.  by participating in a fun run, 5k, or 10k this six weeks.  Help raise money for a charity while developing a healthy lifestyle.  Get your friends and family to join you!  Make sure to take pictures and share with #chsAP or email them to me to verify your attendance at the event.  Reflect on the importance of exercise and fitness in overall health and discuss how exercise and fitness specifically play a role in heart health.
Two local runs this six weeks include the Jacob Logan 5k and the Deck the Trails Nature Park 5k.

  1. Last weekend I participated and volunteered in a 5K color run at my old school Westlake Academy in honor of Emmy Neese, a 5 year old who was diagnosed with Leukemia a few months ago. This run was called A Walk with a Pop! I volunteered and my group was the color group, which meant we threw color on the runners before and after the race! Over 500 people showed up for this local race and we have already raised over $5,000 for Emmy to help with her medical needs. It is so important to take control of your lifestyle and body, and make sure that you are living in a way that will benefit you in the long run. Exercise is so important to heart health. Exercising and getting physical workout helps lower blood pressure, improves your blood circulation, and much more. Keeping your heart and other organs healthy and in check is so important to your entire bodily structure.

  2. This past weekend I participated in the Turkey Trot 5k in Dallas! It was a great experience and I had lots of fun with my family and friends. Fitness and health are a major part of my lifestyle. It is so important to get out, and exercise while eating right because you need to get your heart rate up and blood flowing throughout your body to maintain healthy. Having a sedentary lifestyle is one of the top risk factors for heart disease and bad heart health, regular exercise, such a running/jogging or even walking can strengthen your heart and your cardiovascular system all together. Aerobic exercise is a great is a great way to improve your energy level so you can participate in activities without becoming tired or feeling as though you do not have energy. Your heart is vital to surviving, and we need to do everything in our power to keep it safe. In order to do this, we need to be exercising regularly. Not only is it good for our muscles and bones, but it improves heart failure symptoms and improves circulation to help your body use oxygen better, which is a major step in staying healthy all together.

  3. On November 23rd, I participated in the Gobble Hobble 5k in Richardson! I coach a program called Girls on the Run with my friend Emily for girls in elementary school who enjoying running. Not only is the program promoting the importance of running but we teach the girls self- confidence and some of the problems girls run into when they get older. It's such a cool program. We had the "big 5k" race they had been training for since the beginning of August. It was so cool to coach them the entire season and then actually see them run! We talk about healthy eating and self image as well. We really emphasize the importance of staying fit but we also talk about the importance of loving yourself. We also have a healthy snack after our daily lesson, which is right before our running activity. The program is super fun and I really enjoyed running/coaching with the girls this past weekend.

  4. On Thanksgiving, my mom and I ran in the Turkey Trot. For us, running in the Turkey Trot is a Thanksgiving tradition we've continued for 9 years now! When I was younger, we would usually run the 5K, but as I've gotten older, we now run the 8 mile. I love running with her, and getting in some exercise before we have Thanksgiving dinner is a great way to keep us from over stuffing ourselves. Running in the Turkey Trot is tons of fun and I hope to continue during my college years. Running overall is a great exercise for the heart because it lowers blood pressure and increases circulation. Getting lots of exercise can also lower heart rate as well.

  5. This past Saturday (Dec 14) I ran the 5K, "Run or Dye", at the Rangers Ballpark. This is my second color run and I absolutely love them! I love running, so running through color with a bunch of happy people is something I love to do. I really enjoy running 5k's because it gets my workout out of the way while I'm also having fun. Running is very important regarding our health for many different reasons. It makes our muscles stronger and more immune to long periods of exercise. Secondly, running is good for the heart because it pumps more blood into the muscles which creates more oxygen. .

  6. Today I ran the Jacob Logan 5k. The weather was rainy and cold but it was fun and was for a good cause. It was so good to see so many people out in the rain running to build a house for high school boys in Africa. Running this race was fun and brought the people of Coppell as well as other cities together. I emailed you two pictures to verify that I ran!

  8. On December 21, I ran in the Jacob Logan run at Andy Brown Park. Although i woke up early to find it raining and freezing outside, my friends and I persevered through the cold to make the best of it and to enjoy the wonderful meaning behind the run. Personally, I knew Jacob very well and nothing makes me happier than seeing his legacy continue on and bring the community closer together to raise money for the Jacob House in Africa. He was the epitome of a great athlete and i know he was proud of the nearly 500 contestants in the run. Despite the heavy clothing and groggy weather conditions, I ran the entire 5K in a decent time. Lately, I have been running a lot more frequently and for further distances, resulting in this 3.2 miles to not be so hard. Keeping a good pace and breathing steadily to get enough oxygen throughout my whole body was key and focusing on not how tired i was but the feeling of finishing for Jacob was what kept me going. I emailed you the pictures of my friends and I at the end of the run!

  9. On December 6th I volunteered for the Deck the Trails 5K, which went through the Coppell Nature Park at Wagon Wheel. As a volunteer, I monitored the trail during the race, watched for injuries and cheered runners on! My whole track team volunteering as well, so it was fun for all. Although I didn't physically run this 5K, I still understand the importance of working out and frequently running. Running helps to strengthen virtually every part of the body. Whether it’s strengthening one's heart, legs or even the mind, some part of the body is always benefiting! As far as benefiting the heart goes, running enables easier flow of blood to/from the heart while also strengthening the heart muscle itself. I’m emailing the picture!

  10. On December 21st, I ran the Jacob Logan 5k at Andy Brown Park. Despite the frigid temperatures and rain I had a so much fun running for such a good cause. Its one thing to run to maintain good fitness but it held so much meaning because we were not only impacting the community of Coppell but worldwind with the house that is going to be built in Africa in honor of Jacob Logan. There was no better feeling than crossing that finish line, it was the first 5k that I ran the entire time and I obtained a goal that I set for myself to finish under 30 minutes! I ended with the time of 28:33:65, I feel like 5ks are a great test of fitness because you really have to run at a steady pace and it helps your endurance. I look forward to improving my time and my fitness.
I emailed you pictures to verify!!

  11. On December 21st, I participated in the Jacob Logan 5k run. I did it with my brother, cousins, and friends, and it was a great experience. It felt great to run for a great cause, something so close to home. I felt like I was truly making a difference by contributing to the funds for the house. But, it wasn't just a regular 5k on a sunny day...it was 35 degrees and pouring rain. The rain was a struggle at first, but in the end it was fun thing to experience. In fact, this was my second 5k, and my time improved by 7 minutes. I think this is partially due to the fact that I was ready to be out of the rain, so I was basically sprinting the entire race. Another reason I ran a faster time is because I have been training my body by exercising more and practicing running. Since I was more accustomed to running a long distance, it wasn't as tiring as my first 5k. Staying fit is really important, because for me I have so much more energy and positivity in my life when I do it. Exercising is important to keep a healthy heart, and working your heart by doing running exercises can help keep it working well all the time. I am about to e-mail you a picture!

  12. On December 23rd, me and my family decided to participate in the jingle bell run. This was such a great way to get involved in the community and to get out daily work out in. Although we did the one mile fun run, it was very interesting to see how if you are out of shape, it can affect your body. It was very cold when we went, therefore we noticed that a lot of people were even more motivated to run faster so that they could go back inside. After the race, there was a room filled with stands along with the sponsors of the race. I noticed that while we walked around this huge ballroom, there were all kinds of food and drinks. This ranged from tacos, to pizza, to orange juice and eggnog. I realized that after running in a race, this was not the best choice of food to digest. This is a sad reality because after you run, all you want to do is eat, and most of us reach out for the unhealthy food. I think that in order for the race to have been more successful, they should have had more healthy choices of food.

  13. During Christmas break, on the 21st, I participated in the Jacob Logan 5k. There was a 5k and a fun run, and I did the 5k. A lot of fiends as well as a lot of the community participated in the run. It was awesome to see everyone out there not only supporting the Logan's, but also to see everybody in Coppell getting together to run. A 5k is actually a lot harder than I thought it would be, although I consider myself to be in pretty decent shape due to baseball offseason. I think that it really tested my endurance because I had to try and pace myself. I couldn't start fast because I would lose all my energy by the end of the race. I think that running things like there are important because while it benefits a good cause, it also benefits people's health. Regardless if someone walks or runs the race, they are getting out and exercising which is very important in order to maintain a healthy heart and body. I finished in the top 40 people which I was actually pretty pumped about given the fact that there were many people who ran the race! As a community we should do these more often because it is a win-win for everybody.
I emailed you the picture that I took of the 5k.

  14. I ran the Jacob Logan 5k and although the weather conditions were not favorable it was still great to support. I ran with a couple buddies at a pace of a 9 minute mile. I think it is very important for people to participate in physical activity a couple times a week. It makes you healthy and prevents less things you have to worry about such as heart problems. We raised a ton of money for small cities in Africa. We worked out while raising money for charity.

  15. I participated in the Dallas Brain Tumor Walk. This was such a fun experience not only because I walked it with friends, but I had the honor to walk with a substitute teacher from Coppell High School, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. I know that exercise is very important to keep us healthy and active. Maintaining this type of lifestyle will keep us strong and living long. 5K walks and runs are a good way to excise because they can accommodate all types of people. You are free to walk or run at your own pace, and there is a competitive edge for those who like to race. 5K's are also a great way to raise money, and awareness for many different charities and organizations.

  16. I ran the Jacob Logan 5K and it was a great experience! I loved running with all of my friends and runnning for a good cause. Another good thing for running 5k's are that it is really good for your whole body and specifically your heart! Running is a great exercise for your heart that keeps you healthy. I hope that later on this year I find the opportunity to do something similar to this not only for myself but also for the community.

  17. On Thanksgiving, I ran in the Dallas Turkey Trot. Unlike past years, I trained and ran the 8 mile this year. This was my fourth year participating in the Turkey Trot and it's been a tradition to run with my friend, Ali Martinez and her family each year. This year Ali and I wanted to step it up from the 5K to the 8 mile. To train, in the weeks before, I ran 2 miles after school each day and then in following weeks I Increased it to 2.5 and later 4 miles to make sure I was comfortable and familiar with that pace. The race went great and having Ali by my side for moral support helped a lot. The race was a success and we plan to run a half marathon in the spring. Running and exercise in general are great ways to lower blood pressure and increase blood circulation. I emailed you a picture to verify! :)

  18. I ran the Jacob Logan 5k on December 21st. It was really rainy and cold outside! I do not know why but I wore shorts in hopes that I would warm up as I was running but I was wearing a jacket. I was very proud of myself for finishing in a fairly good amount of time. It was the second 5k I've ever ran and the first time I wasn't able to run the whole way through but this time I did so I was very pleased with what I had accomplished! I am emailing a picture to verify that I was there! :)

  19. On december 21st, i participated in the Jacob Logan 5k run. I got there at 8:30 on a cold and windy morning, and finding motivation to run was difficult. But after the first half mile i felt warmed up and began to push the pace a little more. I felt great after finishing the run but was somewhat disappointed with my time. I've run a much faster mile, but haven't run any sort of distance for at least 6 months so i suppose it wasn't unexpected. Elevating your heart rate is essential to maintaining heart health and clearing out plaque build up in arteries. But whether this cardio is from shorter or longer duration exercises is inconsequential to maintaining general health standards. On this particular run, maybe because of the conditions (raining and 35 degrees) i didn't feel that my cardio was a limiting factor. Instead, the ability of my quadriceps to contract faster just wasn't present. I was wearing shorts, and my knees felt cold to the touch after the run. After finishing i literally swallowed 3 donuts whole, so that probably negated any positive effect of the run haha. Anyway though it was a good experience, and I enjoyed supporting the cause. I emailed you a picture of the scoreboard because i forgot to take pictures while there.

  20. Over Thanksgiving break I recruited my whole family and a couple friends to run the 5K Turkey Trot. At first we were FREEZING cold and stood on huge grates that were blowing warm air to try and keep warm until the race started. Once we started running we had a great time! There were so many funny costumes of turkeys, pilgrims, and random characters and live music through out the race. It was also interesting to see a part of Dallas I hadn't seem before! After the race we felt pretty accomplised for waking up early on a holiday and running a 5K and we were ready to go have a fun day of eating food:)

  21. On thanksgiving, I ran the Turkey Trot in Dallas. My mom and Mrs. Saiter ran the 8 mile race, while Madeline, Rachel and I ran the 5K. It was really crowded at the beginning so it was hard to run, but then towards the middle of the race it was more spread out making it easier to run. It was important for us to get in some good exercise before the thanksgiving activities began. Running is very good for your overall health. It gives you mental and physical joy, it relieves stress, and prevents high blood pressure. This was my first Dallas Turkey Trot, but next year I will definitely be running the Corvallis Turkey Trot in Oregon. (I will send you the picture)

  22. This Thanksgiving I attended the Dallas Turkey Trot for the first time. It was a cool experience running with thousands of other people. It started out slow because of the congestion but running through Dallas not only was good exercise for me, Mary-Kate and Madeline, but it allowed me to see parts of D-town that I'd never seen before and really made us appreciate the city we live in more. It definitely made me feel better about eating that huge Thanksgiving dinner later that day. Running releases endorphins in your brain as well as helping your cardiovascular system become stronger, and those endorphins come in handy when dealing with crazy relatives.

  23. I did not run but I volunteered at the Jacob Logan Run a couple weeks ago on December 21st. It was a very cool and humbling experience to be apart of. All earnings from the run went towards a house under Jacob's name in Zambia for African kids who are orphans. Over 1,200 people signed up for the run, and even with the cold and rainy weather conditions that morning, 400 people showed up to run which is awesome. Everyone who ran strengthened their physical heart because of the exercise they did to honor Jacob, but everyone involved strengthened their spiritual heart because of the children in Africa who are now getting a home to live in.

  24. I participated in the Jacob Logan 5k Run on December 21, 2013. It was one of the best experiences of my life because it was for a good cause and something and someone, Jacob, that has impacted my life greatly. This run helped people get exercise and strengthen their heart. It was not only a great cause but it impacted everyone's health :)

  26. I volunteered to rabbit at a middle school cross country meet on January 8, 2014. Basically what i did was run and bike in front of the kids that were running so that they could follow me and not cut or elongate the route. I think this helpful, because while i may not be raising money I am volunteering to help out at a sporting event in a category that some people might not be able to do. The rabbit is the person at the front of the race that all of the kids are supposed to follow so it needs to be a person that can go faster than the fasted kid. The middle school races only consist of 1.5 and 2 mile races so they look for high school cross country runners looking to run one or two of these events and know the coarse so that all of the kids can follow them. I keeps up my health because i am working out at the same time. My rabbiting volunteer work was beneficial for my own health and the event of the middle school runners who also had a workout that was dependent on my route skills.

  27. This Thanksgiving, Rachel Boaz, Mary Kate Marshall and I ran the Dallas Turkey Trot. It was the first 5k I've ever ran, and I had so much fun! It started out slow because there were thousands of people there. However, after the 8 mile runners cleared off of our path, we had enough room to jog. We had the best time! It was very very cold but we came prepared. This activity helped our overall heart health because it helped our hearts with blood circulation, as well as strengthened our hearts. I hope to do many more after this one!

  28. Early in the beginning of the six weeks, Kevin, Amanda and I participated in the Dallas Brain Tumor Walk in Fort Worth, Texas. We walked along side our former teacher, Clara Caussey supporting a Coppell substitute, Mrs. Carson who had recent ally being diagnosed with a brain tumor. This event was focusing on raising money and awareness about brain tumor research and along with that it helped people get active. People of all shapes and sizes were at the walk, with many loved ones and supporters we all journeyed the 5k. It was a very humbling experience and I'm glad I was there to support Mrs. Carson and her children. During our walk, we had time to talk and chat among our friends while excessing. It seemed to make time fly by and think that it felt less like a 5k but rather a social gathering. It was an overall good experience and I can't wait to walk in support of her again.

  29. The Jacob Logan Run was an experience that I will never forget. Not only was I running a 5k with all of the important people in my life in honor of a dear friend, but I was also exercising for the health of my body. Despite the rainy and freezing cold weather, I had a blast running alongside my mom, sister, and two best friends. "For Jacob," my mom continuously said as we ran the three miles. Due to the fact that I am going to Zambia, Africa this June with Family Legacy Missions, the same organization that the orphanage is being built through in Jacob's name, made this experience so much more meaningful to me. I found the race to go by extremely fast and with ease due to the fact that I not only run each day for my own endurance and health, but due to the fact that I was running for someone that was so near and dear to my heart. I loved running for Jacob in the first ever Jacob Logan Run and I am already looking forward to running for 21 next year.

  30. On December 21 I ran my very first 5K. It was absolutely miserable because of the rain and cold temperatures, but I am proud to say that I never walked! I kept chugging along and finished soaking wet. Fitness is very important to me and I believe that working out helps me to be more positive and in a better mood. The heart loves it when you exercise because it not only can strengthen it, but also lower blood pressure and help your body to use more oxygen. I was watching David Letterman the other night and he had a 100+ year old woman as a guest. She said that one of her secrets was that every morning before she left her bedroom she would exercise. Of course exercise doesn't mean you will live to be over 100 years old but it definitely helps your chances!

  31. On thanksgiving day, a bunch of my family came down from Houston to run with us in the turkey trot. We do this every year and we usually just do the 5K. However, this year my brother and I wanted to try something new so we decided to run the 8 mile option. We had never done this before and we thought it would have been a good experience for both of us. There was a bunch of people that we're running the 5K, but once the turn for those people to go to the finish line came, the roads started to clear up for us so we could run at a pretty good pace. Overall, I think the experience was really good for both of us and I look forward to doing it again with him next year.
