  1. For this project, my friend amber and I went to our local Farmers market to pick out some food that we thought we could make an easy meal with. We decided to buy some local pasta, tomatoes, and cheese to make a simple pasta dish. These foods, to me, are more nutritional because they are grown and produced locally. They aren't going through big factories of any sort, and I was under the impression that the cows were not put into any harm for the cheese to be made. When shopping locally, you know the food comes from near your area, therefore you have some sort of idea as to how the food is grown. You can tell if it was grown in a field that has good soil, and that hasn't been infected with hundreds of chemicals( such as if a farmer decided to start growing food near where a power plant used to be or something). Amber and I cooked for her parents, and they love local food and such so they enjoyed the meal with us. I would definitely go back to the farmers market to ensure that I can get fresh food.

  2. Today we (Cole and Jenn) went to the farmers market in Coppell, Texas. We decided that we wanted to search for ingredients we could make an omelet out of for breakfast. Here is what we bought:
    1. farm fresh eggs
    2. basil
    3. spinach
    4. kale
    5. red and yellow peppers
    6. jalapeño salt
    7. zucchini
    8. feta cheese
    9. tomatoes

We decided to make egg while omelets, the healthier version, and they turned out so good! After eating it, I felt so much healthier and clean inside! All the ingredients we had in the omelets were so pure, with no preservatives, no chemicals added, they were just fresh from the farm. Both of us had a great time visiting the market and we would both go back for sure! Going to the farmers market created a realization that there are ways to feed your body good foods that will fill you up, and help you create a healthy way of living, it is so important to take care of your body, and eating healthy, fresh ingredients is a great way to start taking care of yourself.

My family loved the omelets, they were amazing!

  3. Raw and Healthy fresh foods are better than those that have been frozen or packaged at the grocery store. Organic foods (which can be found at the farmers market typically) are harvested and grown without chemicals and harmful bug sprays and they are grown in natural soils. Organic farmers also try to conserve water as much as possible and try to eliminate chemicals from spreading back into the ground. When foods are bought locally they have an easier route to travel and they will be fresher than those bought in the grocery store that are out of season and must be grown in some states such as California. Cole and I went to the farmers market this weekend and we bought eggs, kale, basil and peppers and feta cheese. We made an egg white omelets with avocados and peaches on the side. Our families have had something basic like this before so it was not very impressive… but it was still good. I bought some jalapeno salt and added that to it as well. I have been dragged to the farmers market a couple of times since I was little but now that I am older I actually think its pretty cool and ill probably go back on a regular basis.

  4. This past weekend, my mommy and I went to the farmers market and bought some watermelon, peaches, fresh bread, potatoes, tomatoes, annaheim peppers, and fresh grown corn. Everything tasted so yummy. (especially the peaches which we ended up putting in a cobbler... but that wasn't part of the healthy meal night) :). For dinner I grilled chicken and made fresh salsa to put on top of it, and grilled the ears of corn as well. With the potatoes, we made "twice baked mashed potatoes" which my mom and I kind of came up with on our own. It was a very delicious meal. Fresh foods are so much healthier than store bought packaged foods, because they don't have all the additives that aren't so great for our bodies. It was nice to only drive 5 minutes to pick up DELICIOUS food. It's nice being local because it makes it easy to go often. My family was very impressed with how fresh everything tasted. We could all tell the difference and my mommy and I really wanna go back again. (My pictures are tagged #chsAP on twitter) :)

  5. This weekend I went to the farmer's market in Coppell and bought some chicken breasts, pasta, tomatoes, and new potatoes. I seared the chicken, roasted the potatoes, and kept the tomatoes raw for my healthy lunch. I made my parents try my potatoes and they said they were perfect. They are now required to call me Chef Allie. All this fresh food is much better for you than store bought food because this food is not processed and is grown without chemicals. Shopping locally helps both yourself and the farmers because you aren't eating bad foods, and you are supporting the farmers. As previously stated, I am the new chef of the house and I will be making healthy meals for my family from now on. I have always loved to go to the farmers market and I will certainly be returning. The food just tasted better, and I'll make sure my whole family comes with me next time! My picture is on twitter tagged with #chsAP

  7. Last weekend Shannon, my mom and I went to the Dallas farmers market. We bought chicken sausage, basil pasta, tomatoes, an egg plant, yellow and green squash. We searched the ingredients and found a really simple recipe. It was fun and easy to make. Also I learned several valuable peaces of information, one that Shannon is an export chopper (I was quiet impressed), two that egg plant is da bomb, three is how to make tomato sauce (it was important to me) and finally that quail eggs are also da bomb (we did not buy or eat any but we learned about then form the women that sold was the chicken, she was cool). Anyway it was awesome and we are totally going back. The food was fantastic everyone (me, my parents, Shannon and her mom) loved it. I was full for the rest of the day. (I emailed you my pictures.)

  8. This past Saturday I went to the Coppell Farmers Market with my mom! That night I made a pasta with cut tomatoes to make a sauce, healthy green arugula leaves for a salad with a lemon dressing and some cut up peaches. I had never been to the farmers market in Coppell and it was a really fun experience. The people are so nice and you can smell all of the pumpkins and vegetables they have set up for the fall time. I really enjoyed picking out the pasta and lettuce I wanted. After eating the meal, I just felt so much more fresh. I normally just eat pasta from a box at the grocery store. It defiantly tasted different. I enjoyed in just because I love pasta so much. The lemon dressing I made was really interesting also. I had never made a dressing from scratch so it was different. Change is always good. I feel like families every Saturday and at least once a week, go somewhere and buy a bunch of just organic healthy food because even healthy food at the grocery store isn't that healthy compared to the food at the fresh farmers market. My mom really enjoyed the peaches and salad. I bought a bunch of peaches so I will defiantly be eating them for lunch this week at school. One thing this year I have bee trying to do is packing leftovers from my dinner and eating them at lunch the next day. I am really glad I did this because it defiantly opened my eyes about how much healthier I could eat.

  9. On my journey to farmers market I bought shrimp, zucchini, honey, and peaches. For the meal I prepared recipes found all from Pintrist. I marinated the shrimp in honey and lemon along with salt, pepper, and garlic and then cooked them in a skillet on the stove. I then cut the zucchini in quarter sized pieces, soaked them in milk, dipped them in bread crumbs and Parmesan and baked them at 425* for 20 minutes in the oven. I put the shrimp and zucchini on a bed of pasta. It was probably the most delicious thing I've ever made. I love going to farmers market to get fresh food that is not covered in preservatives. Plus, it helps the local community because we are supporting their small business instead of large corporations that inject their produce with steroids. I cook/ bake with my family often and this was defiantly a big hit at the dinner table!

  10. Me and my friend Stacey, attended the Coppell's farmers market during the weekend. We saw many stands with different farm grown products that were directly from their gardens. We realized that we weren't getting the products that we're coming from an industry or a store, but a local fresh farm. This was such a great experience because first of all, I had never been to a farmer's market and I noticed that these people that came to sell these products were making a living out of it and that to us it may not have been that important but to them it was what they got to live. While I was there, I bought some tomatoes, and fresh basil that sat on water so that it wouldn't go bad. I made some grilled chicken and I added some rice along with it, and for the tomatoes; I cut up some mozzarella cheese, cut up the basil and sprinkled some balsamic vinegar and olive oil on top. Yummiest thing ever! I would definitely be back but I want to the Dallas Farmers Market next time.

  11. This weekend I visited the Coppell Farmers market with my mom. We looked at all the stands of food and ended up buying one whole chicken, some red potatoes, fresh green beans, and a fresh loaf of whole grain white bread. My family enjoyed the grilled chicken and other sides that I prepared. Going to see the Coppell Farmers market was an interesting experience compared to going to the market in Corvallis, Oregon where I used to live. This market was a while lot smaller and with less variety than I was used to living in Oregon. I would visit this market again because it reminded me of the fresh foods we would buy in Oregon. Fresh foods and locally grown foods are much more nutritious and safer for your body to eat because you know what has happened to the food to get to that point rather than in the packaged store food which contains many preservatives and additives. This project makes me miss all the fresh grown foods in Oregon and visiting the market on Saturday mornings there.

  12. When I visited the local farmers market I had so much fun picking out homegrown vegetables and other ingredients from people in Coppell. While I was there I bought homemade pasta, basil, tomatoes, chicken breast, goat cheese and corn. I then made a chicken dish and a pasta salad. Not only was the flavor of the fresh ingredients delicious but also it was much healthier than buying packaged foods. Because I bought everything at the farmers market, I was able to talk to the venders and find out how the vegetables were grown and make sure no preservatives where used. They were brought straight from the ground to the farmers market. When shopping locally you are not only buying healthier foods, but also supporting those in your own town who sell their products and produces. My mom and dad loved the dinner I made and commented, “ The dinner that Stacey made was delicious! Everything from the pasta to the tomatoes had a nice fresh taste. The pasta salad reminded me of that I might find in a bistro. Wonderful!” I would absolutely visit the famers market again!

  14. My mom goes to the farmers market in Coppell almost every Saturday morning to purchase healthy products for us to eat. I decided to accompany her on her trip and found it very interesting. Purchasing and consuming these fresh foods are much more nutritionally sound because they don’t receive added hormones to make the item bigger, which makes it a lot fresher and healthier than any packaged foods. I made a vegetable dish that consisted of onion, egg plant, squash, potato, and cucumber. These products are not only healthy, but they are also easy to obtain due to the location of the farmers market. It is in Old Town Coppell, which is easy and quick to get to. The farmers market offers a great local location and lots of healthier and balanced food items to eat. My dad has constantly teaching me how to cook since I was a little kid; so preparing this dish was fairly easy. All I had to do was cut the vegetables, assemble them in a platter, put seasoning on there, and then put it in the oven. The dish turned out great, and my family was very appreciative of the healthy delicious meal I made.

  15. On Saturday morning I went to the Farmer's Market and got tomatoes, spaghetti, and cheese
to make lunch for my family that afternoon! I thought the Farmer's Market was very cool and
had a good variety of healthy foods to pick from. In addition everything sold there that I could
see looked very high quality and worth the money. The Spaghetti I made already had some
spices in it and turned out very yummy! To add more flavor I took the cheese I bought and
graded it on top and then diced the tomatoes and added those. I served it to my family and
some friends that day for lunch and it was a success! I will definitely be going back to the

  16. A couple weekends ago, Maddie, her mom, and I went to the Dallas Farmer's Market. We started out looking around and taking pictures of us and some of the food, we ended up buying green and yellow squash, basil pasta, chicken sausage, an eggplant, and tomatoes. When we got back, Maddie looked up a simple recipe for us to make which would include all of the ingredients. We started out by dicing the squash and putting it in the oven to grill for a little bit. While it was grilling, we diced tomatoes and put them in the skillet while also dicing up eggplant to grill it as well. Once the grilling was complete we added the squash and eggplant to the tomatoes in the skillet. We eventually added the chicken to cook and started boiling water to put the pasta in. We boiled the pasta and once the chicken, squash, tomatoes, and eggplant were done, we added the paste and ate! The lunch was actually really good and totally healthy and I would definitely do it again, it took a little longer than going through McDonalds, haha, but its so much better.

  17. This past Saturday, I visited the local farmers market in old Coppell. We started to look around at all the different options that we could make our food with. We decided on making pasta with homemade sauce. The sauce contained tomatoes, onions, red and yellow peppers, and a bit of basil and olive oil. The sauce tasted definitely better than the packaged sauce we get from the grocery store. We could taste a lot more of the flavors, and we noticed how fresh it was. I think by shopping locally is cheaper and healthier. The foods purchased at the farmers market didn't have all the processed fats that packaged food does. It was a lot cheaper than the grocery store also. We made food for both of my parents, and my sister and brother in law, and we still had food left over. It was crazy that you actually got more food for your money. I'm definitely planning on going to the farmers market next week.

  18. I visited the local farmers market this past weekend. They had many fresh healthy options. Fresh food are better for because they have not been infused with chemicals like the packaged foods have. When you shop locally usually you get more stuff for what you pay. Also you know for sure where exactly the food is coming from and its always fresh. I decided to make fish and steamed veggies for my meal, it was by far one of the best meals I have had in a long time.

  19. This past Saturday, my mom and I went to the farmer's market here in Coppell. We bought sweet potatoes, green beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes. That night my family had the potatoes, green beans, cucumbers and tomatoes (which we made into a salad) for dinner. My family really did enjoy this meal because we all knew that it was much healthier than what we normally eat. Buying fresh food from farmer's markets is a healthier and better route to go instead of buying processed food from the grocery store, even if it means that cooking the food will take a little bit longer. The fresh foods provide more energy and are more nutritional than boxed up and packaged food from the grocery store. I definitely enjoyed going to the farmer's market and would love to do this again, especially since the weather is getting cooler. :) My picture is tagged with #chsAP on twitter.

  20. Last weekend my friend, Reagan and I went to the local farmer's market. We were not sure what we would find. I was surprised that they sold fish and pies. We ended up buying a half carton of eggs, a pound of breakfast sausage, and one yellow squash. We were a little concerned about the eggs because the woman who sold them to us said that her chickens were not vaccinated. The eggs ended up being fine. They did look different then ordinary eggs the yolks were a lot thicker. We made scrambled eggs with ground sausage and sliced squash. Together we spend about twelve dollars and we were able to feed six people. I did not realize that fresh food could be so affordable. I really enjoyed the farmers market and I hope to go again soon.

  21. A few weeks ago, My friend Hailey and I went to the farmer's market. This was my first time going, and I was not sure what to expect. When we arrived, there were a few venders set up and ready for costumers. It was quite cute actually. We bought some home made pasta, zucchini, tomatoes, red potatoes, organic cookies, and lemonade. The lemonade we bought was very interesting because the man who made it was in the spice and herb business, and was trying to branch out to other things, so his delicious lemonades had herbs in them. At first I was not sure what to think of the strawberry and sage flavored lemonade, but after just a few sips, I was sold. It tasted like a tangy herb infused heaven. Total, we spent about $15 and fed 4 of our friends and ourselves. The trip to the farmer's market was an adventure that I really enjoyed, and can not wait to do again!

  22. For this project I went to the farmers market in Coppell, Texas and bought ingredients to prepare my family a balanced meal. I am vegetarian so I cooked a vegetarian meal. I bought ingredients to make my meatless spaghetti, a salad, and a cup of fruit. I added oregano, parsley, crushed red pepper, basil, and garlic salt to the spaghetti. My family loved it and asked me to make it again sometime despite the fact that they are meat eaters. Overall, I loved the experience and I would love to visit the farmers market again to make meals like this more often. I love eating healthy organic foods so the farmers market is definitely a place I will be shopping at more often. I had a lot of fun!!

  23. A few weeks ago I went to the farmers market with my mom and my dog. We bought some special bread, potatoes and some honey. Chemicals are put into packaged products so they can last longer within their packaging. By shopping locally currency travels, and potentially stays within the community. I always visit the Farmers Market, and I'm a great cook. My parents don't tell me it, but I like to think I am anyway.

  24. last saturday i went to the farmers market with my mom. she wouldn't let me buy any meat so i made a completely vegetarian dish. We bought sweet potatoes, green beans, salad with tomatoes and olive oil, and a piece of whole wheat bread. it was very filling and fresh. it was interesting to eat a meal without a meat and i didnt expect to be satisfied but i was. it was a really good meal because nothing was processed. i knew exactly what i was eating. i would go again to the market. my favorites were the bread and the green beans. my family really enjoyed the meal especially because i cooked for once. it was nice to know where my food was coming from a local farm instead of god knows where.

  25. I decided to do the farm to the table challenge for this 6 weeks, and had a lot of completing it. I went to the Coppell Farmers Market on a Saturday morning with my friend Annie, and checked out every booth. Then based on the ingredients I found there I found a recipe and purchased the food based off of what the recipe I called for. My mom is gluten free, and my dad is diabetic so I tried to make the meal as healthy and gluten free as I could. The meal that I cooked for my family was bruschetta as the appetizer, but instead of the bread being underneath the basil and the tomatoes, I put white squash beneath to food on top, that way my mom would be able to eat it. My main meal was basil garlic pasta (which was gluten free) with butter sauce and shrimp, for my mom, and then for my two brothers, dad, and grandma there was sun dried tomato pasta with butter sauce and shrimp. Cooking the meal took a tad longer than expected, and I did struggle with cooking the white squash. In the end, the only person who truly enjoyed the "white squash bruschetta" was my mom and grandma, but everyone loved the pasta.
I learned a lot from going to the farmers market and purchasing food there versus the grocery store. When you buy from the farmers market you're buying fresh food, that is coming straight from the people who are selling it. It is healthier than packaged food because it is not processed and shipped everywhere. It comes straight from the farm, to the farmers market, and then to your table. There are many benefits that come from shopping at your local farmers market. First off, you help your local farmers, and you provide the community with reasons to keep the farmers market. After buying all of my ingredients from the farmers market, and cooking a meal for my family, I would definitely go back to the farmers market, I love it!!

  27. After attending the Farmer’s Market, I made a healthy meal for my family. For the main item, I purchased a chicken breast from a local farm. My dad and I grilled it together. Compared to chicken bought at the grocery store, my family thought the one purchased locally tasted significantly better. In addition to the chicken, I bought zucchini and squash. Fresh foods are always healthier for you since there are no added ingredients. When you buy a can of green beans or bag of frozen corn from the grocery store, manufactures can add extra sodium to them. There are also great benefits to buying locally grown items. In addition to helping the farmer and community financially, farmer’s markets also help protect the environment. When food is local, it does not have to travel far. This decreases the amount of carbon dioxide emissions. Overall, the Coppell Farmer’s Market was a very enjoyable experience. I hope to try new foods next time I go such as cheese, bread, and honey.

  28. When going to the Coppell Farmers Market, there were two things that surprised me. Spending money based on a student salary, Amanda and I didn’t want to spend more than 6 bucks each. With our twelve dollars in total, we bought a carton of 6 eggs, a pound of breakfast sausage and one squash which fed my entire family including amanda, a total of 6 people, all for 12 dollars. That was a big shock to me, the meal was essentially two dollars a person and we still had leftovers. The second thing that shocked me was that ONE squash fed all six of us and there was still more left! Usually when you think of cooking for 5 or more people you think that ingredients have to increase, but thats wrong. In this case, that ONE squash went a long way and fed many. Going to the Farmers Market proved to be a beneficial outing, one that I look forward to more often. The Farmers market gave my family a healthy meal, one not processed or made on an industrial scale. Locally grown food proves to be better for you and in the long run its much cheaper!

  29. I went to the Coppell farmers market a couple weeks ago and I went not knowing what to expect. I went with my friend Leisa Hernandez and we went from stand to stand looking around at first then deciding what we would prepare with the farm fresh ingredients. Our first stop was the vegetable stand I got some zucchini which appeared greener and more tender than what you would find at the grocery store. I also picked up some tomatoes, red onion and and a jar of fresh homemade pasta sauce. As we made our final selections I came across pasta which was made locally and was flavored I had to get that to complete the dish I had in mind. Aside from that I bought some herbal tasting lemonade and some red potatoes. I sautéed the onions, tomatoes and the zucchini chopped up I added the sauce to this mixture and bam I had an awesome sauce to top my homemade roasted garlic pasta with some boiled potatoes and some lemonade to complete the meal. This was my first time going to the local market but certainly not the last. The people who were selling the food or the farmers would give you a detailed summary of where and how the food was made how it was grown and ideas on what to do with whatever you bought. I'm all for shopping there instead of Walmart or even sprouts because all that is sold is being grown and made a few miles from your dinner table and you are also supporting your local growers. Awesome experience I recommend to all.

  30. Eating healthy is a big part of my families life, so when my mother suggested the local farmers market we were all for it! We bought some fresh veggies, along with some nuts, and made a delicious veggie stir fry. We loved it! We will be going there for local produce more often because of the lack of preservatives!

  31. By shopping locally you help the independent farmers in the area make a profit off of their goods. These goods also don't have preservatives like packaged products at the stores. When I visited the farmers market in Coppell and purchased bread, cheeses, tomatoes, and sausage. From this I made pizza using the sliced bread as crust, tomatoes into sauce and cheese and sausage for toppings. My family enjoyed it, however it was a little more expensive than what can be found at the grocery store. Also my mom normally buys reduced fat products, so I was not used to how rich the cheese and sausage were. But, just for fun, I would visit the farmers market again.

  34. A few week ago I went to the farmers market, not really knowing what to expect. I had no particular recipe in mind, I just wanted to be inspired. When I got there I decided I wanted to get the ingredients for spaghetti. I bought whole wheat noodles, organic sauce, and fresh spices. For a side I bought tomatoes and cucumbers. When I got home I out all the ingredients together to make the spaghetti and it was very delicious. Even my dad liked it! The cucumbers were a little bitter though, because I realized later that they weren't in season. In the future I'll get ingredients that are in season to put into my food. I think the benefit of buying locally is the fact that you know that the money you spend will be going back into the economy and you know that the stuff you are putting into your body is safe and clean.
